Braziliaanse opera De Gitaren des Doods

Come to the colorful musical world of the interior of Brazil. The opera "The guitars of death" was written by composer Elomar Figueira Mello in the tradition of the old Italian opera, but is also full of elements from the culture of the Sertão of Bahia: melodic and rhythmic lines, recitatives that refer to the old troubourskunst and Iberian romantics. With four singers, an instrumental ensemble and a fairy -tale decor, an old Brazilian folk tale is sung and played. This opera was translated into Dutch especially for the Apollo Ensemble. The story is about Dassanta, a stunning goat herd, but much more about the herd tractor and the guitarist, who compete together in a singing duel for her love. This game, with fiercer and more complicated rhyme schemes in which they guide themselves on the guitar, results in a tragedy. A short introductory film is shown prior to the opera.
