About event
Brno 17th x Studentship for Open Culture x JAMU x VŠMU: Freedom of culture is the freedom of all of us!
Where: auditorium of the JAMU Theater Faculty
When: 18:30-20:00
Discussed by: prof. PhDr. Martin Šmatlák (VŠMU rector), Adam Straka (VŠMU doctoral student/Open Culture!), Ráchel Rimarčíková (representative of the Open Culture Study initiative)
"We do not intend to silently watch interventions aimed at ideologically controlling funds , on which the funding of culture depends, and questionable personnel exchanges in key institutions. We do not intend to remain silent in the face of attempts to normalize, limit and dictate to art and culture their values. We reject all efforts to intimidate the already over-represented cultural community, including attacks on specific representatives, the queer community and other marginalized groups. Art is and must remain free!” (you can read the entire ŠOK manifesto here)
What role do students and recent art graduates play in political events? How can they influence the direction of the political situation and the free functioning of culture and cultural life? Does it make sense to let your voice be heard not only in art? What possibilities of supporting Open Culture are offered - and what concrete steps can students of JAMU and other art universities take to contribute and support these initiatives?
Come meet and discuss together with Slovak guests - and above all look for possible solutions and form of support!
The discussion is primarily intended for students of art universities. It takes place as part of the program of the Brno Seventeenth Festival, which celebrates freedom and democracy, actively builds on our predecessors from 1989, and commemorates the moment when the largest number of people in Czech and Slovak history went together to let their voices be heard in the streets in order to achieve change in companies.
ŠOK platform! is the voice of students, a generation that has to face the consequences of the tactics of the Slovak Ministry of Culture. The platform is based on the principles of civil society and is committed to defending the basic rights to free creation and dignified conditions for all those who devote themselves to culture. It is added to the requirements of the Open Culture platform! and requests immediate correction of the current critical situation. Although this initiative was created mainly in the environment of students of arts and humanities, it is aware that the situation crosses the threshold of the artistic spectrum and concerns the whole society: "Culture concerns each of us, regardless of whether it is our work environment or not . Therefore, we invite students from all spheres and fields to join and support our initiative for free and independent culture and media in Slovakia."
