DISCUSSION: Theatrum politicum - how do theater and politics interact?
18. 11. from 6:00 p.m. (90 minutes)
Place: Mahen Theater, small stage
It is the evening of 17/11/1989, the Brno HaDivadlo and the String Theater play a performance of a scenic of the magazine Rozrazil 1/88 - About democracy in the Prague club Na Chmelnici. But the production unexpectedly collides with reality more than anyone would expect: a direct testimony of one of the students is heard as part of the performance, informing about police brutality and the events on Národní třída. Both theaters immediately go on strike, which is joined not only by theaters across the country.
Theaters thus played a vital role during the Velvet Revolution, but also theatrical thinking about social events: Václav Havel and Petr Oslzlý, the dramaturg of the Theater on a String, together, for example, thought about theatrical staging of the form of revolutionary demonstrations. Theater artists were part of the Civic Forum, they began to enter politics. Even today, many of them express their political opinions in the media, they use their voice to support a specific opinion within productions or a theater season.
But how essential is this theatrical voice today? Is it strong enough to still comment on politics in a fundamental way, transform society and serve it as one of the tools of active citizens? Are theaters even expected to play the role of commentators on the current socio-political situation? Are there any risks from this even today? And what influence does politics have on the theater? Is theater really free?
Come and discuss with personalities who live and create theater themselves!
