On Sunday 26 November 1989, as part of daily demonstrations, people decided to go from Náměstí Svobody to the prison in Bohunice, where political prisoners of the previous regime were imprisoned. It became a symbolic gesture: several tens of thousands of people united in a chain of hands, which was supposed to connect the center of Brno with the prison in Bohunice. The chain really connected this route and, moreover, fulfilled its purpose - one of the most prominent political prisoners, the dissident Petr Cibulka, was literally thrown out of the prison in front of the gate, and the people carried him from Bohunice to the podium on Náměstí Svobody.

Topic of political prisoners is also reminiscent of the prison in Uherské Hradiště, in whose walls history has been written since 1920. Only the Gestapo and but the communist totality brought here the cruelty perpetrated on the people who were imprisoned here. During the Second World War, political prisoners were gathered here before being transported to concentration camps, in the 1950s the State Security used its cruel investigative methods here.

Political prisoners have not disappeared in many countries, even today, which is why important not to forget, remind this topic and be actively interested in how we can help political prisoners where we are. On November 26th, as part of the Brno 17th program, we will connect the past with the present, because our voice still matters today!
