When the demolition of the former House of Trade Unions - Istropolis began in 2022, it was not the first time that a public building from the socialist era was demolished in our capital. 🏢
What was unique, however, was the interest of the public and the discussion that this intention unleashed about Bratislava's heritage of "brutalism".
Radically modern monuments from the 60s and 70s of the last century - the inverted pyramid of the Slovak Radio, the dynamic silhouette of the SNP Bridge with a space restaurant on top
pillar or slanted "logs" bridging the baroque SNG Water Barracks - have become unmistakable symbols of today's Bratislava. To this day, they are seen as controversial and provoke passionate debates. 🌆

In the lecture I will focus on brutalism in architecture: what this style means and whether we can even talk about brutalism in Bratislava. I will reveal the stories of the most famous, but also almost forgotten works from this period. Together we will discuss whether brutalism can be beautiful - and whether it is worth protecting it👀.
