About event

“France has Houellebecq, the Balkan countries have Perković.”
– Fabrice Colin, Le Canard enchaîné

Funeral gone wild: Some trips take you to the sea, others in the middle of family madness.

The first-person narrator of this novel, a woman around thirty in today's Bosnia, can hardly be shaken. She has come to terms with the lack of prospects in her life and is only interested in crime series until one day her mother forces her to go to Aunt Stana's funeral - and nothing goes as planned. A crazy road trip in a rickety Golf, an unlikely funeral and mercilessly stubborn family members who have one thing in mind above all else: securing their share of the inheritance. A fast-paced satire of Bosnian post-war society with lots of black humor and bizarre twists, profound and absurdly funny.

Slađana Nina Perković (*1981) is a French-Bosnian journalist and author. In 2018 she published the short story collection “Cooking” (Kuhanje). "Aunt Stana's Funeral" (U jarku) is her debut novel, with which she was nominated for the prestigious NIN Prize and the "Meša Selimović" Prize in 2021. In 2022 she was awarded a “Special Mention” from the jury at the European Union Literature Prize (EUPL). Perković now lives between Paris and Belgrade.

Rebekka Zeinzinger, born in Lower Austria in 1992, studied German, history and comparative literature. She lived in Bosnia-Herzegovina for three years, where she taught German language and literature at the University of Sarajevo. Today she lives in Vienna as a cultural mediator, editor and translator from Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. Works by Lana Bastašić, Faruk Šehić, Milica Vučković and Slađana Nina Perković have appeared in her translation. In 2025 she was awarded the Alexander Sacher Masoch Prize for her work.
