A night in a hospice in the middle of a big city. Three sisters are at the bed of their dying mother and kill the time. A doctor does her round. Someone falls asleep for the television. A woman with a drip seems lost in time.
While the night is entering and the sounds of outside silence, the border between waking and sleeping, body and mind, life and death fades. Now that the end is approaching, no one seems to know how to live. Until the sun finally rises and the new day finally separates the living from the dead.
A physical music theater performance that aims to be the eclectic version of "waiting for Godot". Burning Sweetgrass is full of polyphonic singing, exciting dance, everyday conversations and tranquil images. Just like earlier work by Uma, the performance mixes various musical traditions. For example, Burning Sweetgrass is inspired by the Indonesian gamelan and classical organ music and they are put in a contemporary jacket with synthesizers and drums.
