About event
Enjoy a taste of 18th-century German culture as experienced by the music patrons at the Zimmermann Kaffeehaus in 1735 in Leipzig, Germany!
In 1723, Zimmermann's Kaffeehaus was the largest and best-appointed Kaffeehaus in Leipzig and a center for gentlemen and the middle classes. While women were forbidden from frequenting coffeehouses, they could attend public concerts at Zimmermann's. At this event, the audience will hear from Zimmermann, but you'll also hear from some of the women as well! In 1729, Johann Sebastian Bach began holding regular concerts there, consisting of German and Italian opera, chamber music, secular cantatas (such as his Coffee Cantata), and works for orchestra.
We’ll perform J. S. Bach's Coffee Cantata (a humorous blend of coffee culture, family dynamics, and brilliant music) and other small group performances, while the audience enjoys coffee served in a special mug you get to take home. German pastries will be available for purchase along with beer, wine, and other refreshments.
There will also be a raffle for gift baskets and a small silent auction to raise funds to support the Bach Cantata Choir in their ongoing mission to provide live performances of the music of J.S. Bach and other Baroque composers.
Doors open at 1:15.
