About event

For centuries, the Girona road of Sant Jaume, of about 300 km, has been used as a starting point for the Jacobeu pilgrimage. Many of the Romans who followed it came from the Italian Peninsula, the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa, and had reached the Iberian Peninsula, landing in the Port of La Selva, which in the Middle Ages welcomed a small port controlled by the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. After visiting this monastic complex, and passing through Montserrat, they walked to Galician lands. In turn, pilgrims from Languedoc, northern Italy, the Carolingian Empire, Hungary and the British Isles, after gathering in the church of Sant Jaume in Perpignan (13th century), accessed the Iberian Peninsula through the Pyrenees through the Coll de Banyuls. This circumstance has been reflected in various documents issued to Santiago de Compostela and preserved in the records of the Kingdom of Aragon. 🪶

In addition to being easily accessible, this path offered other advantages, such as the opportunity to move through villages with an abundant agricultural activity or the presence of numerous monasteries that welcomed pilgrims. Also, this route, in reverse, served during the medieval period to pilgrimage from Catalonia to Rome. ⛰️

In this stage, which connects Sant Pere de Rodes i Vilajuïga, we will leave from the aforementioned Romanesque monastery and continue on the path that leaves the Sierra de Santa Helena on the left and that approaches the GR-92-0 and the GIP-6041, just before passing the dolmen of the forest of La Margalla, which rises to the right. The first locality we will find will be peace. From there we will advance parallel to the GI-610, which runs to the left, and which will lead us to Vilajuïga.
