The city of Tomar
The origins of Tomar date back more than 30 thousand years, as revealed by the various archaeological finds that prove the human presence in the territory. It was in 1159 that D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, donated this territory to the Order of the Temple, as a reward for the help provided in the formation of the kingdom and for the great military feats achieved. A year later, the Knights Templar and Grand Master Gualdim Pais would order the construction of the Castle, which would become the headquarters of the Order in Portugal, and found the town of Tomar. In 1581, Philip II of Spain convenes the courts in Tomar. It was during the Philippine period that the Pegões Altos Aqueduct was built, with the aim of supplying water to the Convent of Christ.
Pegões Aqueduct
The project for this aqueduct was carried out in 1584 by the renowned Filipe Terzi, chief architect of the Kingdom, with work only beginning in 1593. It was only later, in 1616, under the direction of architect Diogo Marques Lucas, that the work was completed, in which the plumbing was extended to the Convent building, reaching the dormitory washbasins in 1617 and reaching the fountain of the main cloister in 1619, the effective date of completion of the project.
The Aqueduct extends along approximately six kilometers, connecting water from four springs located on the outskirts of the city of Tomar, in the place of Pegões, to the Convento de Cristo. It is made up of a total of 180 round arches and represents one of the most important public works of the 17th century in Portugal.
It is made up of simple arcades and two layers of overlapping arches in the area of greatest slope, precisely over the Pegões valley, where it reaches a height of 30 meters. It is this structure that gives it all its magnificence and beauty, being one of the most imposing Portuguese aqueducts. The Aqueduct of the Convent of Christ has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

The Nabão River
Tributary on the right bank of the Zêzere river. It originates in the central region, in the place of Olhos de Água, and heads south and crosses the entire municipality of Tomar, passing through the city and flowing into the Zêzere river. It is important to highlight the Agroal site, a perennial spring with a large flow that feeds the Nabão River. Agroal has the largest resurgence of the Nabão River, which springs from Middle Jurassic limestone with a flow rate of around 1,000 l/s and an average temperature of 16ºC. This spring is much appreciated for its cold waters, reputed to be thermal. In the city of Tomar, the area called Levada de Tomar also stands out, where there is a building complex with a relevant chronological horizon, from the medieval period, through the modern era, to the contemporary era. Its origin dates back to the end of the 12th century and, with a complex succession of spatial and technological contexts, its industrial activity remained until the end of the 20th century (and, in one of the workshop units of this group, it remained until the beginning of the 21st century ). This building complex is adjacent to the Nabão River.
