National Park of the Picos de Europa
UNESCO recognized, in 2003, the natural value of the Picos de Europa, 85 years after the region was distinguished as the first National Park in Spain. The Picos de Europa are one of the most amazing national parks on the European continent and are made up of 3 large massifs and divided between Asturias, Cantabria and León. It is a place of worship not only for its mountains and gorges, but also for the sanctuaries of Santo Toribio of Liébana and Covadonga.
Cangas de Onis
Cangas de Onís was the capital of Asturias and is currently a town of 4,500 inhabitants full of hotels and shops selling gastronomic products and mountain equipment. The offer is varied and ranges from cheeses, charcuterie and the cider that is so typical in this region. In Cangas, the pointed Roman bridge is worth highlighting, with the Cruz da Vitória (symbol of Asturias) hanging over the waters of the River Sella, as well as the Chapel of Santa Cruz and the Church of Santa Maria, with its magnificent stained glass windows.
Lakes of Covadonga
The lakes of Enol and La Ercina constitute an unforgettable landscape of the entire trip and the views around them and the viewpoints dos Lagos is something that will remain in the memory of all nature lovers. From here there are hiking routes for all tastes, such as the one that leads to Miradouros do Rei passing through various grazing lands and traditional shepherd shelters!
Covadonga
Upon arrival At Covadonga, the first formation you see is the Auseva rock emerging between the deciduous forests, with Santa Cova hanging from the rock and a waterfall springing from below. It seems like a dream, however everything is real, even if seasoned with the fantastic spirit of the 1877 reconstruction. The architecture here becomes the perfect complement to the cult of Santina and Pelayo, a historical figure who rests in the place where, on the 28th of May in the year 722, he won the battle that would forge his epic history. We will visit the Sanctuary of Covadonga and the Basilica of Our Lady of Covadonga, a neo-Romanesque building that leaves no one indifferent.
Ribadesella, Llastres and Llanes
Asturias, in the north of Spain, has a very interesting group of coastal villages that, in themselves, are worth a visit to the region. Nestled between the sea and the Llastres mountains, in the municipality of Colunga, it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, a distinction it officially holds and which is fully deserved. This fishing village, once dedicated to whale fishing and strong against possible invasions from the coast, was distinguished as an Exemplary Village of Asturias. Llastres has a spectacular historic center, with cobblestone streets, palaces and emblazoned houses that mix with the simple fishermen's houses, and all have a common denominator: the sea breeze that constantly caresses them and the splendid panoramic views of the Bay of Biscay and Monte Sueve. There are many charming places: the Balleneros neighborhood, the Buen Suceso chapel, the Clock Tower and the Church of Santa María de Sábada.
The village of Ribadesella, founded by King Alfonso X “the Wise” in 13th century, offers visitors an interesting mix of medieval urbanism and modernist architecture, as well as a wonderful beach area. The urban structure of Ribadesella is conditioned by a bridge that divides the fishing port in two. On this bridge, on the first Saturday of August, is the finish line of the most representative festival in Asturias: the Canoe Descent of the River Sella. Its historic center has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Llanes is one of the most visited locations in Asturias, due to its beaches with fine white sand, walks surrounded by trees, precious monuments and the famous Cubes of Memory, the work that the artist Agustín Ibarrolla created by painting the cement blocks.
Potes and Monastery of Santo Toribio
The city of Potes is located in the geographic center of the Liébana valley and is one of the most visited cities in Cantabria. It is the ideal destination for lovers of nature, mountains, outdoor sports, good food and those passionate about history and culture. The square is the heart of the city and one of the busiest places. In the background stands out the Torre do Infantado, which is the great symbol of the town. At the bottom of the valley runs the river Deva, and a walk on its banks along the bridges is something we will do. Potes holds many other charms among its streets and squares. The old quarter is divided between the two banks of the Quiviesa River, and is one of the areas where the traditional architecture of the region is well reflected.
One of the most venerated treasures of the Santo Toribio de Liébana Monastery is the Lignum Crucis, a piece of the True Cross. This relic, believed to be the largest surviving fragment of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, is displayed for pilgrims and visitors. Its presence adds a feeling of admiration and reverence to the monastery, in addition to its natural surroundings and the views from the San Miguel viewpoint.
Arenas de Cabrales
It is is another gateway to the Picos da Europa National Park and is famous for cheese and has the Cheese Museum. It is the starting point for several walking routes.
