How to deal with violence and misanthropy? What can be done to counter authoritarian regimes and attacks on freedom and equality? And what does humanism mean today?

Carolin Emcke's new book: »Respect is reasonable. Texts about our present" brings together speeches and columns from the last ten years - haunting texts about attitude, responsibility and resistance.

Carolin Emcke is a contemporary witness who thinks cosmopolitanly and locally. With an unerring eye, she dissects social and political conflicts and calls for opposition to exclusion and a lack of empathy. She asks: who do we want to be in times of destruction of democracy and truth? "Emcke's texts keep alive the question of whether it matters if people are drowned out and fall silent while others eloquently exercise their power." Elisabeth von Thadden, Die Zeit

Carolin Emcke is a freelance journalist and is repeatedly involved in artistic projects and interventions, including the "Telling War" themed days at the House of World Cultures. Carolin Emcke has been organizing and moderating the monthly discussion series “Streitraum” at the Schaubühne Berlin for over ten years. She has received several awards for her work, including the Theodor Wolff Prize, the Otto Brenner Prize for Critical Journalism, the Lessing Prize of the Free State of Saxony and the Merck Prize of the German Academy for Language and Poetry. In 2016 she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Published by S. Fischer ›Of the Wars. Letters to Friends‹, ›Silent Violence. Thinking about the RAF', 'How we desire', 'Because it can be said: About witness and justice' and 'Against hatred'.

An event by Literatur LIVE in cooperation with the Heimathafen Neukölln and the Thalia bookstore. Presented by the Berliner Zeitung at the weekend

»Respect is reasonable« will be published on September 24, 2025 by S. Fischer Verlag, 368 pages
