"Bohuslav Martinů's fantasy remains a reference work for players and an experience for listeners. We owe this to Lucie Rosenova, who stubbornly fought for the promotion of the theremin as an instrument of contemporary music (…) Talented performers such as Lydia Kavina, Carolina Eick, Charlie Draper, Thorwald Jorgensen and Katica Illényi draw from the repertoire she built and show the world the beauty of its sound."
Valerio SAGGINI (Bohuslav Martinů and Lucie Rosen: the Path to Fantasia for Theremin)

Leon Theremin (1896 – 1993) was a Russian physicist and inventor dealing with electronic instruments since the 1920s, thanks to which he also made a name for himself in the USA. One of them was a theremin controlled by hand movements in the instrument's electromagnetic field. The sound of the theremin can be found in the works of Varés, Schnittke or Cage, but also in popular and film music.

Bohuslav Martinů's (1890 – 1959) fantasy for the theremin was created in the early autumn of 1945 on the order of the American performer Lucie Rosenova, considered a virtuoso on this instrument. Lydia Kavina, who studied playing the theremin with its inventor, will perform in the Slovakian premiere of Martinů's composition in Bratislava. She also collaborated with artists such as Robert Wilson, Howard Shore or Tom Waits. The program will be completed by the String Trio No. 1, the first composition that Martinů wrote in Paris. Piano trio no. 2 from 1950 is one of the highlights of the composer's neoclassical period. Late Duo no. 2 for violin and cello was created over four days in the last year of the composer's life.

Journey into Fantasy (for Theremin)
SUNDAY / 19 October 2025 / Moyzes Hall / 7:00 PM

Leon Theremin (1896 – 1993) was a Russian physicist and inventor who, from the 1920s onwards, focused on the development of electronic musical instruments, gaining recognition in the United States as well. One of his most groundbreaking inventions was the theremin — an instrument controlled by hand movements within its electromagnetic field. The distinctive sound of the theremin can be heard in works by Edgard Varèse, Alfred Schnittke, and John Cage, as well as in popular and film music.

Fantasy for Theremin by Bohuslav Martinů (1890 – 1959) was composed in early autumn 1945 at the request of an American performer Lucie Rosen, who was regarded as a virtuoso of the instrument. The Slovak premiere of Martinů's composition will feature Lydia Kavina, who studied the theremin under its inventor himself. Kavina has also collaborated with artists such as Robert Wilson, Howard Shore, and Tom Waits.

The program also includes Martinů's String Trio No. 1, his first composition written in Paris, and the Piano Trio No. 2 from 1950, a highlight of the composer's neoclassical period. His late Duo No. 2 for Violin and Cello was composed in just four days during the final year of his life.
