About event
Discussion evening dedicated to translation challenges in the context of the Nobel Prize for Literature. The story of this year's laureate Han Kang illustrates the key role of translation in today's literary world. Her novel The Vegetarian, published in Korea in 2007, gained international recognition only after its English translation in 2016, when it received the prestigious Man Booker Prize. Her latest novel, I Don't Say Goodbye Forever, has not yet been translated into English, but was published in a Swedish translation this spring - a fact that no doubt played a role in the Swedish Academy's decision to award the Nobel Prize. This development once again raises questions about the journeys of literature across languages and cultures. How does literature from "small" languages reach global readers? What does it mean to translate from Korean, a language distant not only geographically but also structurally? And what role do translations into English play as a mediating language?
These and other questions will be discussed by Petra Ben-Ari, translator of Han Kang's works into Czech, Miriam Löwensteinová, head of Korean studies at the Faculty of Arts, UK and translator of Korean literature, and Viktor Janiš, a renowned translator from English and an expert on the translation scene.
Anežka Charvátová, chairwoman of the Translators' Village, accompanies the evening.
The event takes place with the financial support of the m. of Prague.
