The Oskar Čepan Award was created in 1996 at the initiative of the American foundation Trust for Mutual Understanding. It is part of the international Young Visual Artists Awards network. Since 2001, the project has been implemented by the Foundation - Center for Contemporary Art with the support of the Trust for Mutual Understanding, and since 2016 also in cooperation with Residency Unlimited. The project serves to support contemporary visual art, its creators. Enrollment in it based on an open call is not limited by a specific medium. The age limit for participation in the project is 40 years. The Oskar Čepan Award is part of the wider international network YVAA - Young Visual Artists Awards, organized in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Oskár Čepan (1925 – 1992) was a distinguished critic and theoretician of visual arts with a broad scope and penetrating outlook, dedicated editor and anthologist, erudite and perceptive author of texts about contemporary Slovak visual arts, philosopher, theorist, historian and critic. He had an irreplaceable position in the Slovak history of visual arts of the twentieth century. His texts are still relevant and surprisingly accurate today.
