Dear community, dear If you are interested,
we cordially invite you to take part in our qualification workshop on mechanisms of support for African women's groups: private, public and self-help.
In recent years, more and more African women in Berlin have shown interest in sustainable empowerment mechanisms, be it through social opportunities or through self-help mechanisms. In Germany, women's groups receive support through a combination of private, public and self-help initiatives. These include financial resources and non-financial support such as advice, networking and skills development. What avenues are available for African women to access these resources? We will discuss this in our workshop.
Participation is free and only takes place on site. We ask you to register at: [email protected]
Main idea
Many private institutions support the empowerment of women in society. This support usually comes from foundations, companies and civil society organizations. They often focus on funding initiatives that promote gender equality, education, health or ending violence (including symbolic violence) against women. Other forms of (non-financial) support aim to provide resources and networking opportunities, for example through the provision of premises, digital technology and access to professional networks through partner organisations. With this kind of support, it becomes easier to start on the path to self-help. Self-help mechanisms are based on the principles of mutual support, shared decision-making and the use of the “sufferer competence” of the members themselves. One such form of support is the savings and credit groups (SHGs), which promote women's financial independence and provide funds for emergencies or income-generating activities. In parallel, women who are organized and cooperate can more easily obtain mutual emotional and social support, exchange knowledge, develop their skills and represent their interests collectively. These pillars often work together, whereby external support (private and public) can strengthen self-help groups, while self-help groups in turn ensure the effectiveness of external programs at the local level.
Event format
Exchange and discussion circles: In a safe and welcoming atmosphere, participants exchange information about their problems, difficulties, experiences and solution strategies. The workshop leader often works based on examples of African women and initiatives and tries to get the participants to take an active part.
We look forward to your participation!
