About event

What to read in winter: East

Christmas holidays are a time when you can turn off notifications, make tea and open an interesting book.

Literary scholar and book critic Nina Kalaus will give a lecture on winter reading - and offer to look at it from two sides of the world: East and West, two different ways of thinking and feeling.

And we start from the East - literature, which today is experiencing a golden age and sets the tone in culture.

Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi and mono no aware, Korean culture of memory, Buddhist idea of freedom - all this forms a special optics, where events give way to state, and meaning is born between the lines.

We will talk about

- why Japanese culture has become a new intellectual magnet,

- like myths, Shintoism and the Buddhist idea of impermanence shapes the style of writing,

– why Eastern writers can talk about family, memory and loneliness in a way that touches even the most sophisticated reader

Nina will present the top 7 books from China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. The best novels and detective stories of 2025 that are worth taking with you during the long winter break.
