Chungking Express (1994) - Melkweg Amsterdam

Together with Heat, an agency that represents filmmakers, we present a bimonthly film evening, curated by passionate makers from their roster for an evening of connection and inspiration. Each edition is dedicated to a unique host and inspiring guests; they select a main film that shows what they stand for and that motivates them within their creative field. And they take you on a two-hour journey into their vision.

This edition is hosted by Aramis Garcia Gonzalez, featuring director Wong Kar Wai's 1994 feature 'Chungking Express' - a kaleidoscopic view in the hectic (night)life of Hong Kong. Wong weaves together big city life, Eastern culture, crime, love and the music of The Mama's and the Papa's (California Dreamin') into a mesmerizing dream clip. In the strikingly stylized film, two police officers both suffer from a broken heart. One fights his heartbreak by running, the other suffers so much from the departure of his girlfriend that he does not notice that the snack bar girl Faye is madly in love with him. Chungking Express is an iconic work from the 90s and the film that made Wong Kar Wai an instant movie darling. Anything is possible in Wong's gloriously filmed masterpiece, which forever transformed the combination of canned pineapple and Mamas & the Papas' California Dreamin' into the pinnacle of romantic longing. The film has been restored to 4K.
