About event

The Old Town Library, the State Science Library in Banská Bystrica and the State Science Library in Košice in cooperation with the international documentary film festival One World cordially invite you to the event Moments of Hope - a film screening combined with a discussion.

How can democratic values be protected at a time when public space is increasingly filled with polarization, mistrust, hate speech, misinformation and one crisis after another? What role do citizens and initiatives like Slovak Open Culture play in this? or the Czech association Million moments for democracy, which long-term mobilizes the public to defend democracy, open culture and European values? Do they actually have a chance to change something? And where is the line between civic activism and politics - and what happens if someone crosses it?

🗨️ The co-founder of the association Million moments for democracy Mikuláš Minář, the director of the film Moments of Hope Amálie Kovářová and Katarína Mišíková from the Open Culture initiative will discuss.

🎬 MOMENTS OF HOPE (2025)
In 2019, almost three hundred thousand people gathered at Letná in Prague. They demonstrated against the prime minister, the president, but above all for democracy. Two students who were worried about the future of the Czech Republic spoke to them from the stage.

The unique film about Mikuláš Minář and Benjamin Rollo reveals the fascinating story of the founders of the Million Moments for Democracy movement. Director Amálie Kovářová spent six years filming behind the scenes of the association, which was behind the biggest protest since the gentle revolution. He went through successes and failures, enthusiasm and lethargy, celebration and disappointment of supporters. And Mik and Ben lived all that from the beginning. Guys who believed that hope can prevail even in difficult times.
