In 1916, the First World War rages on the Austrian-Italian mountain front: The Italian general Leone (Alain Cuny) leads his soldiers to the slaughter and constantly incites them against the impregnable position of the Austrians, without taking any losses into account. The mountain peak has great strategic importance for Leone, which is why he does everything he can to take the fortress - even if this amounts to a suicide mission. Lieutenant Sass (Mark Frechette) wants to save his battalion from senseless death and refuses his superior's orders, even if he himself is conflicted about his loyalty, and little by little there is increasing resistance among the soldiers against this suicide mission...
