About event

We invite you to the opening of the City to City exhibition, which is part of the Art & Tech Days 2024 festival.

The vernissage of video art, which will be created during the online residency, will be the result of an international online collaboration between the artist Anni Kinnunen from the Finnish city Oulu and Košice artist Jakub Pišek.

During the more than one-month residency, they will create a work that will reflect on the theme of the Periphery and will be presented at the same time with the work Discarded Sound 21/11/2024 in the Alfa Gallery in Kasárňy/Kulturpark at 18:00.

➤ PERIPHERIA

The presented work is the result of the cooperation of two artists, two personalities connected creativity and an internally mature approach to creative activity. Anni Kinnunen's videos are calm and contemplative.

Their principle is hidden in changing the view of time, which seems to flow in disagreement with reality, with our culture of flashing, with the phenomenon of fast cutting, continuous flow of information. Seemingly simple or minimalist means at first glance challenge us to examine what we are looking at. After a while, we realize that we are not observing the content of the video, but we are observing ourselves. The external impulse turns us inward, we are confronted with a new sensitivity and fleeting peace hidden in reserved colors and moderate to mysterious shapes.

This "intimate" material in the hands of Jakub Píšek opens up to a new level of interpretation. Time, which until now was flowing linearly, is distributed in an area. Concentration on a point in the center of the screen dissolves into endless running strips. We see a closed world in its past, present and future. Everything is accessible at one moment and in one place.

In this way, Jakub not only figuratively but pragmatically approaches Wagner's fascination with metaphysics, which he used in the libretto for the opera "Parsifal" where space and time are mystically unified "Raum und Zeit". In Jakub's progressive and contemporary interpretation, we thus find time in the dynamic surface of large-scale projection.

➤ Anni Kinnunen
Anni is a visual artist whose most important tool is photography, but she also works with video art and installations. Anni is firmly rooted in a strong lineage of Finnish female artists who use performance art in paintings, but her photographs are not self-portraits and are not related to with pseudo-documentary self-portraits often seen in contemporary photographic art.
Over the past two decades, Anna's works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Japan, China, Russia, Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Iceland, Denmark, Luxembourg , USA and Canada. In Finland, she participated in events such as the Young Artists Exhibition at the Kunsthalle Helsinki (2009), the Northern Finland Biennale Snowball Effect (2012, 2014, 2016) and the Mänttä Art Festival (2013, 2018). Her works are part of the collections of the Art Museum in Oulu and the State Art Collection of Finland.

➤ Jakub Pišek
Jakub is a graduate of the New Media Studio in Košice, studied under the guidance of the German artist Anna Tretter. He was interned at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, France and at a residency in Dortmund, the European Capital of Culture RUHR 2011.
In his production he uses technology as both a medium and a target of his interests. Rather than re-presenting old works, he prefers to demonstrate the creation of a work on the spot. It leaves the genuis loci visible, works with the specifics of the place and responds flexibly to emergent situations. He devoted himself to video, computer graphics, interactivity and music.
