Resistant tongue dance

“strange songs” is a performative practice by Claire Vivianne Sobottke, that explores the voice as an unruly organ with a life of its own. This practice defines the voice as both a poetic and political phenomenon and engages in dialogue with voices: that occupy the body, that are invited and that are silenced, yet still speak.

As a hyperphysical movement, the voice is constantly dancing – in thoughts, breath, sound, singing, and language. The singing or sounding voice, a form of bodily communication beyond the limits of the linguistic sphere, paradoxically touches the unsayable.

For Tanznacht, Claire Vivianne Sobottke opens her performative practice in the form of a sijelo (LINK). For and with the visitors, she explores why dancing with the tongue can be risky, why resistant tongues throughout history were cut out, and what bodies — and their tongues — can do aesthetically, and politically. The relationship between voice and spirits will also be given space, as well as the feminist potential of “strangering” the voice, which challenges normative body arrangements.

➡️ Claire (she/her) is a choreographer, performer, and dancer. She defines her work as a place of resistance where norms of thinking about bodies can be challenged. In her practice, she thinks of the body as a turbulent accumulation of concepts, histories, trauma, memories, projections, identities, and magic. Dancing thus becomes a way to activate the body’s archive, to make visible its inherent turbulence. Herein, the voice acts as a hyperphysical political tool and poetic phenomenon.
