About event

Get ready to jam out with old and new friends and learn the art of creating music with everyday items at the Jug Band Ensemble class!

Class Description:

Six Weeks starting Thursday, January 22nd 7:30-9:00

Limited spots

Everybody loves seeing a jug band, but there’s often more to this fun
music than meets the eye. In this class we’ll dig into original jug band
recordings from the 1920s-30s, learn about the artists who created them
and practice building arrangements that reflect their unique style.
Players of all skill levels will have a role in our arrangements. If you
already play a standard instrument like guitar, mandolin or harmonica,
or a homemade instrument like jug, washboard or washtub bass, please
bring it. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn a homemade
instrument if you like.

Bio:
Arlo Leach has taught jug band classes and workshops around the country,
published original research on early jug bands and organized
fundraisers for several musicians’ gravestones. He has performed in
Louisville, KY and Memphis, TN, the jug band heartland. He currently
hosts a monthly jug band jam and leads the How Long Jug Band in
performances around Portland.
