Phillip Earl Niblock (1933-2024) was one of the main New Yorkers artists of experimental music, died in January 2024 at 90 years old. Known as a composer, photographer and video design, where some of the attempts to classify his vast production have varied a lot, with some labeling it as a structuralist, minimalist, or simply, sound artist. Nevertheless, always eager to challenge categorization, Niblock preferred the terms "composer" or "intermediate artist" and stated that there were no transversal conceptual lines to his work and his various means that proved a categorization.
Niblock created his music from drones. Drone, English Word which means ousn or abelion, which we can translate as a staff, or not-pedal in Portuguese. They are long sounds that in the case of Niblock are characterized by an accumulation of sounds that create a physical effect, called the beat. Niblock -created drones are electronically generated, recorded, reemptedly and sometimes arranged in a microtonality. Niblock initially used tape recordings and then later the electronics and the computer. Nevertheless, he added to his sound other instruments capable of sustained sounds, thus adding to his vast sound panoply; The cello, the bellows, the Hurdy-Gurdy and the organ, among others.
In this honor we will present two works to pipe organ, Unmouded (2019) and Nagro (2019), orders from the Festival Musica (Strasbourg) and dedicated to organist Hampus Lindwall (1976-). These works will be accompanied by the part of the movie The Movement of People Working (1973). This film was made and recorded by Niblock on 16 mm tape during its travels to various countries, where it documented the activities and worldly tasks of these peoples in their most elementary form.
In this tribute we will use several organs, all with a different genesis (Hammond organ, Portuguese historical organ, German symphonic organ and French romantic organ, among others) that will be arranged and spread in the space of O'Culto through the altifact orchestra that thus transforms the physical space a devoted to the worship of sound and image.
