📚 Reading Club: “From History to Fiction” with Helena Vasconcelos 📚

From 19 SEP to 5 DEC | 6:30 pm | Sala Lopes-Graça

The History of humanity is a puzzle and a complex discipline for those who deal with it with scientific rigor. The gentle advice that we should learn from her so that the same mistakes are not repeated would be ideal if that were possible. It is not, because human beings, in essence, always continue to exhibit the same defects (and virtues).

However, in the vast territory of universal History, Literature seeks themes, characters and ideas. There are of course the so-called “historical novels”, which are always fascinating, but which focus mainly on prominent figures, such as kings, queens, politicians, generals, etc. It is an undeniable fact that History is made, mostly, by the victors and not by all those who experience relevant events without leaving marks in the dusty annals of Time.

However, there are novelists capable of bringing these events to life characters, integrating them into a specific historical moment.

In this book club we will talk about these protagonists like all of us, but permanently immersed in History: Cashel Greville Ross, in Boyd's book, (the entire 19th century), Baltasar and Blimunda in Saramago's ( 18th century in Portugal), Fabricio dei Dongo in Stendhal's (the Napoleonic campaigns), the women recovered from the Iliad in Barker's, Saleem Sinai in Rushdie's (the formation of India as a nation) or the author/journalist himself in Cercas' (Spanish Civil War).
