- NORD architects, Copenhagen
When Johannes Molander Pedersen and Morten Rask Gregersen returned to Copenhagen after completing their studies in London, their prospects were not promising. In 2002, the construction industry was plagued by a crisis, and budding architects had almost no creative options. However, the difficult start was blessed by improvisation, thanks to which they started organizing participatory workshops for local institutions with the aim of drawing attention to the social dimension of architecture, which was a very progressive agenda at the time.
Today, NORD is a multidisciplinary team of urban planners, architects, landscape architects , consultants and researchers and, in addition to Denmark, has footprints in Germany, France, Sweden, Norway and the USA. Despite their varied scope and projects of various scales, their motivation is still the same: to design healthy buildings and urban environments with the highest possible degree of sustainability. Similar slogans are not new, but NORD architects went further and anchored systematic efforts in the manifesto of the six commandments of humanization and social sustainability, which they consistently honor in every project. More and more often, they solve assignments in the field of care for aging people diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In works such as the Alzheimer Village in the French city of Dax or, more recently, the Memory Care Center in Philadelphia, NORD architects applied an innovative program that turns originally rigid facilities into places full of natural life and proves that losing one's personality does not have to be just a passive wait for the approaching end.
