"We need to work on changing the mentality and begin to realize that the quality of housing is not so much dependent on its size in square meters, but rather on the services that offers.”
MAIO is an architectural studio with a focus on inclusive and open spatial strategies that promote resilience and adaptability over time. Their projects cover a wide range of assignments – from urban planning and architecture to furniture design and research. The priority is the effort to question common prejudices, to accept the diversity of social structures and to respond to the changing complexity of everyday life through clear and durable architectural solutions.
MAIO is headed by Maria Charneco, Alfredo Lérida, Guillermo López and Anna Puigjaner, who was nominated as finalist of the Rolex Mentor & Protégé initiative 2016 and won the Harvard GSD Wheelwright Prize. MAIO members actively combine professional practice with academic, research and editorial activities. In 2011–2016 they were editors of Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme and currently teach at ETH Zürich, ETSAB/ETSAV (Barcelona) and Elisave. In an international context, they presented themselves at several prestigious forums such as MoMA, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Royal Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Triennale di Milano, CIVA and the Venice Biennale.
