About event
Music is often described as a universal language, yet it has taken many different forms throughout human history. From the chants of ancient rituals and the grandeur of classical symphonies to the improvisation of jazz and the digital beats of today, music has always been more than entertainment — it is a mirror of who we are. It carries memory, expresses identity, and has the power to unite or divide.
From a **historical perspective**, music reflects the values and struggles of each era. Classical compositions once spoke to ideals of harmony, order, and transcendence; folk songs captured the voices of communities and their everyday lives; and modern genres like rock, hip-hop, or electronic music often challenge traditions, question authority, or celebrate individuality. Yet despite these differences, echoes of the past remain. Many argue that modern music, even in its most experimental forms, still carries within it elements of the classical — structure, rhythm, harmony, and the search for emotional depth.
From a **psychological perspective**, music reaches us in profound ways. Neuroscience shows that rhythm and melody activate deep emotional circuits in the brain, influencing our moods, our memories, and even our sense of belonging. A single song can transport us back to a moment in childhood, strengthen bonds in a crowd, or help us process complex emotions we cannot put into words. Why does music have this power? And how does it shape the way we think, connect, and even define ourselves?
In this session, we’ll treat music not just as sound, but as a cultural, social, and inner force. We’ll ask: what role has music played in shaping history, identity, and collective memory? How do different traditions and genres speak to one another across time? And in today’s age of streaming and algorithms, is our relationship to music becoming more fragmented — or more universal than ever before?
