The Czech Republic and NATO: 25 years of a common journey
Screening of a new commemorative documentary and public debate
What does NATO membership mean for us? This year marks 25 years since the Czech Republic joined the North Atlantic Alliance. According to a recent survey by the STEM agency, 70% of Czechs currently agree with membership, but at the time of accession negotiations, the then ambassador Karel Kovanda had to face questions about the low support of the domestic public during a meeting with NATO representatives in Brussels. It hovered around only 50%. How the negotiations took place, what was the state of the Czech army at the time or what role did compatriots play in the USA are the topics we will talk about with the editor-in-chief of journalism and news of the Czech Republic and former
reporter of ČTK in the USA Juliá Stejskalová , by witness and former publisher of the American papers Petr Bízek and political scientist Vladimír Bízek from the Department of International Relations and European Studies of the Masaryk University in Brno.
Moderator: Tomáš Spáčil
Guests:
br/>At the time of the accession negotiations, he worked in New York as the publisher of Američki listých and, together with other members of the American Friends of the Czech Republic association, he was behind an initiative that
encouraged Czech compatriots to lobby American senators for the Czech Republic's admission to NATO.

The event will take place in the Cinderella room (no. 219) on the second floor and is created in collaboration with SI and Post Bellum. The event is free, no need to register in advance, just come.
