CRIME OF PASSION
A MUSICAL ACCOUNTING BY AND WITH ANTHONY HÜSEYIN
The musical theater performance CRIME OF PASSION by the Berlin performer and singer Anthony Hüseyin gets to the bottom of femicide on the opera stage, the historical roots of femicide and its presence in our everyday lives.
CRIME OF PASSION has its roots in the Napoleonic codes and justifies “crimes of passion” against women to this day and reduces the punishment of the perpetrators. Inspired by Hüseyin's own biography (while studying opera in Istanbul, Hüseyin prevented the femicide of his own mother), the performance confronts us with how femicide is romanticized and perpetuated by cultural and legal systems.
However, Carmen, Salome and Violetta no longer take part. They refuse to die on stage over and over again. Instead, they now claim their stories as their own. The opera trio on TV screens and Hüseyin as a stage performer dismantle the white, male, sexist and racist gaze of high culture. Together they catch the perpetrators, intervene and hold them accountable: Why are you killing us?
In English and Turkish, with German surtitles.
