The Coliseum opens its doors again. Almost a quarter of a century after the legendary gladiator Maximus spilled his blood there, another warrior finds himself in the arena, shaking the foundations of Rome itself. The legendary director Ridley Scott will be there again.
Lucius (Paul Mescal), grandson of the emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of the "first" gladiator Maximus, lives in hiding in one of the last free cities in North Africa. However, the vast Roman Empire will not leave him alone. All it takes is one massive attack by a fleet led by General Acaccio (Pedro Pascal) to turn a prosperous city into ruins and the free Lucius into a nameless slave. The well-built captive is noticed by the organizer of the gladiatorial games, Macrinus (Denzel Washington), who wants to make him the star of the Roman Coliseum (until he is replaced by someone more capable). However, gladiatorial games are not the main game that Marcus plays. Realizing the weakness of an empire ruled by two mad emperors, Caracalla and Geta, the shrewd strategist sets up a risky game in which the gladiator and rightful heir to the Roman throne, Lucius, his mother Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, reprising her role from the first film) and general Acacius, her husband, and the man her son hates to death for ruining his life, fight on an imaginary chessboard. A clash is about to take place, during which blood will flow not only through the Colosseum, but also through the streets of Rome.
