About event
“Left-bundle” book premiere. Andrej Holm, Katalin Gennburg and Patricia Machmutoff in conversation with Ralf Hoffrogge
n more than 15 years of fighting the Berlin rent movement stopped privatizations, implemented the recommunication of tens of thousands of apartments and won majorities for the socialization of the residential corporations. But the rental price explosion has so far not been able to stop the movement, but only brakes. The rental price spiral began with the financial crisis in 2008 when global financial investors discovered the previously small -scale housing markets in Germany. However, the centralization of real estate capital also allowed the resistance to be bundled: With the newly created listed landlords, hundreds of thousands of tenants had the same opponent.
The young Berlin rent movement knew how to use this. She organized great alliances from small neighborhood initiatives, ruined the image of the living corporations with skillful media work and drove the Berlin Senate in front of her with two referendums. One of them caused a sensation worldwide under the slogan "Deutsche Wohnen & Co", but has not yet been implemented. However, the apartment question can no longer be ignored a year before the 2026 deputy in 2026. Socialization, but also the regulation of the housing market is on the table again. What does the Berlin example for other cities mean? Beyond living and renting, the struggle for socialization refers to a crucial question of left -wing politics: How can social movements in the middle of right pressure to win their struggles?
Andrej Holm (city sociologist), Katalin Gennburg (member of the Bundestag, Die Linke), is moderating Patricia Machmutoff (Deutsche Wohnen & Co. Expropriation).
