Dialoog: de toekomst van Sectie C

On Monday, December 9, we will reflect on the future of creative zones in densifying cities, such as Section-C.

As cities grow more and more – not only Eindhoven – many urban challenges are literally coming 'closer' together: the construction of many new homes, activity, the availability of green zones that are important against climate change and the construction or improvement of roads and infrastructure. em>

Radicale Wegpreparers is a group of Section C members and local residents who jointly explore the qualities of Section C under the leadership of designer Florian de Visser. They are inspired by 't Karregat, the radical experiment by architect Frank van Klingeren. He designed a multifunctional community center where neighborhood facilities came together on one square, under one roof and without walls. Van Klingeren saw that in the 1960s everyone withdrew into their own social world. He called this 'clumping'. Groups of elderly people or children hardly came into contact with each other anymore. For Van Klingeren, architecture therefore had to contribute to what he called 'decoagulation'. By not or hardly physically shielding various activities, there was automatically more public space. In his view, the resulting inconvenience was not a disadvantage. On the contrary, it increased contact and ensured social acceptance.

During the debate, with special guest architect-critic Piet Vollaard, the original and current qualities of 't Karregat and Section-C explored. But other cases are also discussed with Piet Vollaard: Zoho in Rotterdam and Magacin Cultural Center in Belgadro. How do you organize the mix of living and working during densification? Can this go together without 'hindering'? What lessons can be learned from other developments? How can you preserve the area's unique qualities and safeguard them in the development process? We will discuss these themes with the discussion leader, Bernhard Lenger.
