We invite you to a joint meeting dedicated to the current issues of the functioning of culture in a situation of the changing role of the state, growing repressive tendencies and political and economic pressure. We want to open up space for the search for a common language within the cultural community – across disciplines and national contexts – and to jointly search for ways to clearly and convincingly communicate the importance of culture as a public interest.
The meeting will connect the experiences of actors from the Czech Republic and Slovakia and will focus on media and communication strategies that can reach the general public as effectively as possible.
Hosts and guests will present their experiences from the position of civic initiatives, independent media, professional cultural organizations and state institutions. Together they will discuss how to defend the independence of culture and strengthen its public support in times of social uncertainty.
At the round table, we will deal with the following questions:
— How does the social role of culture change in a situation where the state ceases to fulfill its basic functions?
— What interests do we share across individual cultural fields?
— How to talk about culture as a matter of public interest?
— What language is used to effectively communicate the importance of culture to the public?
— How to overcome the perception of culture as a "necessary" area?
