Martin Benko's Day at the artist's museum

The Slovak National Museum in Martin and the Regional Tourism Organization Turiec invite everyone who wants to not only learn more about the artist, but also develop their own creativity.
👉The life and versatile work of one of the most important Slovak artists, the founder of Slovak modern art, Martin Benka, will be commemorated on Saturday, August 8, 2026 with a day-long event. It will be held in the premises of the artist's museum and the adjacent garden on Kuzmány Street in Martin.

🕥 10.30 a.m. – guided tour of the Martin Benko Museum with accompanying remarks by curator Monika Váleková. Due to the limited capacity, it is necessary to reserve the entrance in advance

🎭 Afternoon program in the museum garden
The program symbolically refers to the three artistic muses of Martin Benka – literature, music and visual arts, which donated.
📖 1 p.m. – creative literary workshop **How to make a book or how Martin Benka helped books to the world**. It will be led by cultural publicist and writer Igor Válek. The artist's drawings inspired him to write the legend about Šútovský waterfall of master Benko. From his talk, you will learn more about how a book is created and what is the role of an artist - illustrator in this creative process. Of course, with an emphasis on the illustration of Martin Benka. Children will be given space to write a short story and create their own illustration for it.
🎨 3 p.m. – art workshop **Benka with pastels**. It will be led by artist Andrea Gálik. Right in the garden, participants will try out the oil pastel technique and work on painting easels, just like professional artists. The workshop will introduce children and adults to the work of Martin Benka, his artistic style and inspiration from nature in a playful way. Each participant will take home their own artistic or literary work and experience artistic creation outdoors. 🎻 17.30 – 18.30 – string quartet concert conducted by Marián Kramár. It will feature musical compositions by the artist's favorite composers, his own composition and the end of the August day will refresh the summer musical surprise.

The event has the ambition to continue cyclically in the following years in an expanded time and program format. Its character and content go beyond the borders of the Turiec region and invite visitors from all over Slovakia. At the same time, it contributes to the development of cultural tourism in the city of Martin, which has long been profiled as an important center of Slovak culture, history and art.
