About event
In November, the Czech Museum of Music will celebrate twenty years since its move to the building of the former baroque church of St. Mary Magdalene on Mala Strana. On this occasion, we invite you to an open day with a rich program for all music lovers, including the little ones. You can look forward to tours of the hidden corners of the museum, fun stations for children and a unique concert in which "singing hands" turn live music into a visual experience.
The museum is housed in a building with unusual architecture and a fascinating history. The original church later served as a post office, gendarmerie barracks or the State Central Archive. After moving the archive to new premises on Chodovec, the building was taken over by the National Museum, which was looking for a suitable location for the Czech Museum of Music. Until then, the music collections were located in the Grand Prior's Palace and in 2004 they moved to Karmelitská street.
Families with children can look forward to creative workshops, a listening corner or a meeting with a master violinist. The adventurous will be delighted by the guided tours of the museum from the basement to the attic, which will take them to places where visitors normally cannot get to. The route will also include a stop to look at historical documents that the museum keeps in its collections. The On Tour exhibition and the Man – instrument – music exhibition will be open throughout the day, which will also be enlivened by guided tours. The top 70-member Pueri gaudentes choir will resound in the museum courtyard. As part of the Year of Czech Music, mainly works by Czech authors will be heard, but also African spirituals or Italian Renaissance polyphony.
This year we commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Bedřich Smetana, whose best-known works were created while completely deaf. The choir therefore joined forces with experienced interpreters from the Silent World organization and prepared examples of artistic translation of music into Czech sign language. It will thus offer an extraordinary opportunity to perceive Smetana's music from a new perspective. And not only for hearing listeners, but also for the deaf. We believe that connecting beautiful music with visual representation will bring everyone an extraordinary artistic experience.
Program:
10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 | guided tours of the museum building from basement to attic
10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm | guided tours of the exhibition Man – instrument – music
art workshops for children for the exhibition On tour

listening corner with historical recordings
