After Anton Corbijn's films Depeche Mode: Live in Berlin (2014) and Depeche Mode: SPIRITS in the Forest (2019) will bring the English band to the Lumiére cinema screen for the third time and in addition to hundreds of other cinemas around the world in the latest music documentary Depeche Mode: M. Directed by award-winning Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frías, the film captures the band's three sold-out concerts in Mexico City in September 2023, attended by over 200,000 fans, and combines footage from them with interviews and archival material.
The concerts were part of Depeche Mode's tour in support of Memento Mori, the band's fifteenth studio album and the first since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher in 2022. The performances in Mexico were chosen for the film because of the country's cultural obsession with death and mortality, which is also the theme of the album, which includes songs written during the COVID-19 pandemic and after the shock of Andy's sudden death.
Film Depeche Mode: M celebrates the band's worldwide influence and at the same time deals with the deep connection between music, mortality and Mexican tradition - a sacred meeting place where pain, memories, joy and dance intertwine and merge into something deeply and beautifully human.
Audiences can look forward not only to songs from the album Memento Mori, but also to hits such as Personal Jesus or Enjoy the Silence.
The film will be screened at 2 500 cinemas in more than 60 countries worldwide.
