About event

This tour of the Danse Macabre in St. Mary's Church differs from other tours in that it contrasts the late medieval Dance of Death with contemporary works of art by Sven Drühl. The basic theme in both cases is death, which breaks into human reality and from which no one can escape.
The late medieval dance of death is a 22m long mural in the tower vestibule that shows how death dances with high and low, with spiritual and secular people. Each figure is commented on by a rhymed dialogue in Low German, and the combination of text and image illustrates the basic message of the Dance of Death: before death, all people are equal and in the dance they have to answer to death.
Sven Drühl created his version of the Dance of Death in 2011 for the Hospitalhof in Stuttgart and is now showing parts of it again in St. Mary's Church. Seven black-monochrome paintings with lying, dancing and arguing skeletons are complemented by a large-format triptych and a sculpture.
The special attraction of the tour is that Sven Drühl will be present and explain his works of art.
