About event

Stories about seeds, resistance and dignity from Lebanon, Palestine and Tunisia

Food is not just a basic need. Access to food is always a question of power and justice. Food systems around the world are characterized by inequality, exploitation and political violence. In wars, under occupation or through structural adjustments, hunger becomes a weapon - but farmers, communities and social movements resist, organize themselves and create living alternatives.

This evening we bring together voices from Lebanon, Palestine, Tunisia and from farming movements in Brandenburg. Together we want to talk about food sovereignty, forms of resistance and solidarity in a regional and international context.

Film screening and panel discussion with Raya Ziada (Ramallah), Imen Louati (Tunis), Michelle Eid (Beirut), Julia Bar-Tal (Brandenburg)

Moderation: Tanja Tabbara, Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung

Films:

Seeds of Dignity (Lebanon, 30:30 min, OmU), German premiere
Path to Sovereignty (Tunisia, 07:51 min, OmU)

The discussion will be interpreted simultaneously in German and English. Admission is free.

About the panelists:

Raya Ziada (Palestine) is program manager for food sovereignty in Palestine and Jordan. Her work combines agroecology, radical pedagogy and collective action, with a focus on confronting colonial violence and developing practical strategies for decolonial feminism and food sovereignty. She is co-founder of the Manjala Agri-cultural Initiative and the Palestinian Agro-ecological Forum.

Michelle Eid (Lebanon) is a researcher with the desire to one day work in agriculture herself. She is program manager for food sovereignty at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Beirut. Her work focuses on agricultural policy and socioeconomic justice in the Levant. She works intensively on questions of land and community resilience - with the clear aim of connecting local struggles and reimagining more equitable food systems in the region.

Imen Louati (Tunisia) received his doctorate in ecology and evolution from Sorbonne University in 2015. Since then she has worked in national and international organizations as a scientist and program manager. Her research addresses topics such as food sovereignty, energy transition and equitable transformation. She is currently a researcher and regional director of the “Political Ecology” program in the North Africa office of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Tunis. There she supports actors in North Africa who are working on the development of transformative social-ecological alternatives.

Julia Bar-Tal (Brandenburg): is a farmer, agricultural and human rights activist. She is co-founder of the Young Agriculture Alliance in Brandenburg, the first Syrian network for food sovereignty “The 15th Garden” and “Farmers without Borders”. For several years she was managing director of the Northeast Rural Agriculture Working Group.
