About event
A blueprint for the republic?
The culture palace of the VEB Maxhütte Unterwellenborn has been a place for grassroots cultural work with a theater, singing club and art circle since 1955. The country's show stars performed here, while amateur artists from the steelworks exhibited their pictures or performed in the choir and orchestra. Due to its size, design and furnishings, it is considered an archetype of the around 2,000 cultural houses in the GDR. In the book “Max Needs Society – The Culture Palace of VEB Maxhütte Unterwellenborn” published by Christoph Liepach, the authors tell the architectural history and cultural policy of the GDR in all their contradictions. What would the preservation and cultural revival of this palace mean for people today?
Lecture: Christoph Liepach, photographer and publisher, Leipzig
Moderation: Sören Marotz, exhibition director DDR Museum
COOPERATION WITH THE LEIBNIZ INSTITUTE FOR SPATIAL-BUSED SOCIAL RESEARCH E.V. (IRS)
Admission is free of charge.
