About event

The cherry orchard is to be sold! So, the second cherry orchard, here and now in Germany 2025. It's good when the whole family meets again because there are so many memories attached to it. But also the first one, because it was in Namibia, planted by his great-grandfather, who, as a colonialist, didn't want to miss out on his Black Forest cake. Varja is 37 years old and no longer experienced it; even her stepmother Andrea only knows about it from stories. And her stepsister Anja no longer wants to have anything to do with this story, but at twenty years of age she is primarily aiming for a good work/life balance. There really are more important things to do, like saving the ailing family business, which rests entirely on Varja's shoulders. When Andrea's subtenant Trofimov and Varja's foster sister Lolo join them, the table is set for an emotionally charged family reunion...

Author Martin G. Berger and composer Wolfgang Böhmer use Chekhov's classics as a starting point to negotiate current socio-political questions about property, inheritance, guilt and intergenerational justice in their new musical. They don't shy away from humor or complexity. Böhmer takes the audience into a sometimes dazzling, sometimes jazzy-chansonesque sound world with piano, double bass, bayan, an Eastern European accordion, and wind instruments.

Director Alexandra Liedtke, who directed DADDY UNPLUGGED at the Neukölln Opera in 2024, also allows the human and interpersonal nature of the characters to shine through in all their complexity in this cherry orchard and turns that around Unsaid.
