About event
🟡 The National Film Archive invites all adults and brave children to the newly digitized film Ninth Heart at the Ponrepo cinema.
📽️ Juraj Herz wanted to avoid shooting political films during normalization. That is also why, at the end of the 1970s, he accepted an offer from Ota Hofman's dramaturgical group, specializing in works for children and youth. Originally, he was only supposed to film an adaptation of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast for her. For her film version entitled The Virgin and the Beast, however, the decorations of the old castle were so expensive that Herz, under the pressure of the Barrand studio, had to make one more film in them, and thus Ninth Heart was created. The film owes its original fair style to Eva and Jan Švankmajer.
The protagonist of the horror-tinged story with a captivating visual side is the itinerant student Martin. He decides to free Princess Adriena, imprisoned by the warlock Aldobrandini. But Martin's true love is the puppeteer Tonička, whom he met among traveling artists.
We are looking forward to seeing you on 15 November at 18:00 at the Ponrepo cinema. More information about the screening and tickets can be found on our website.
