About event
Devenir – Spanish for “becoming” – describes a natural, gradual form of transformation. Under this title, guitarist David Strbac presents a program that reflects central stages in his artistic development as well as his long-standing connection to Spanish music.
Strbac's interest in this repertoire arose in his youth. Spanish guitar music had a lasting influence on his early years, so much so that his university professor later jokingly called him “Mr. Spain”. Only over time did Strbac recognize the family background of this closeness: his ancestors on his mother's side came from Spain, a cultural heritage that was hardly present in his childhood in Serbia, but which unconsciously continued to influence his musical preference.
The Belgrade-born musician has been living in Vienna for almost a decade. Years of study, international concert activities, chamber music projects and formative personal experiences shaped his artistic profile. The repertoire presented was created over a long period of time, during which Strbac gradually developed and recorded the works - always characterized by moments that, in retrospect, turned out to be decisive.
Devenir offers a concentrated insight into this process. The flamenco-inspired compositions of Falla, Turina and Rodrigo stand in effective contrast to the lyrical tonal language of a composer like Eduardo de la Maza. Together they illustrate the stylistic and personal influences that accompanied Strbac's musical development.
The program invites the audience to trace this development: an artistic search for traces that makes the different facets of Strbac's musical identity audible.
