The novel “The Deep” (“Toń”) tells the story of several generations of a family whose fate is closely interwoven with the former East Prussia, a region where Polish, Masurian, German and Lithuanian identities have been intertwined for centuries. We follow the life fates of the protagonists, starting with the time of war - the fall of Königsberg and Rastenburg and the unstoppable advance of the Red Army -, through the era of communist Poland, in which the past is not spoken of at all or only in a whisper, up to the present, in which a new conflict develops.
And so we get to know the story of the grandmother Janka, that of the aristocrat Gudrun, hers Lover Max, a German surgeon, Aunt Gertraud, Janka's son, Wolf, and Alicja, the youngest member of the family and an anthropologist who is having difficulty coping with selling her parents' house on the Guber - a mysterious building full of memories.
Ishbel Szatrawska talks to Karolina Kuszyk about the novel, which is now available in German and translated by Andreas Volk.
The event will be Polish<>German simultaneous interpreting
