Social-scientific expertise offers interpretive tools for the problematization of social institutions, which is often linked to efforts to transform them. During the development of AI, software engineering can thus be affected by theses about algorithmic bias, multinational corporations can focus on issues of diversity and inclusion (some of them did and no longer do so), and distrust of public service media can be legitimized and fueled by theses about political the economy. How can we sociologically understand these seemingly unrelated social processes and their effects? And following Simmel's thesis on so-called formal sociology, can we think about them in such a way that we also think about meta-formal sociology?
