About event
We invite you to the opening of the Discarded sound exhibition on December 5 at 5:00 pm in the Východoslovak Gallery in Košice.
The collaboration between two artists Róbert Rampáček and Leon van Oldenborgh Discarded sound/Discarded sound was presented at the Art & Tech Days conference 2024, which is organized annually by Creative Industry Košice. The work thus travels further to the premises of the Východoslovak Gallery.
Noise-canceling headphones have quickly become the new standard for personal audio playback, allowing those able and willing to invest to retreat into controlled private soundscapes, free of any ambient noise that surrounds them.
Who actually has access to this technology and is this individualistic approach to managing the noisy environments we face every day the best solution? What do we lose by muting sounds that this technology classifies as "noise"?
Discarded Sound is an interactive installation that playfully uses active noise cancellation technology to rethink the way users normally use this technology.
It focuses on recording "rejected sound" through custom-made headphones, which is sound that the headphones actively dampen and keep out of the user's reach.
By engaging the visitor in a game where the only way to win is to listen and analyze this sound at a detailed level, Leon and Robert connect participants through sound with different perspectives on this technology and mechanics, from individual user, to broader approaches to sound in the private and public environments we inhabit.

‣ Leon van Oldenborgh (NL)
Leon create both physical and digital interactive experiences that disrupt the way people normally interact with their the environment. They encourage people to think about how their chosen behavior within the gaming experience relates to their actions outside of it. In their work, they examine decision-making and mutual interaction, which is not based on social expectations and culture, but is the result of the influence of factors such as technologies, creator intent, or mutual agreements.
More recently, their work has focused on communicating the power that lies in the design position of widespread technologies such as web interfaces or location-based games. Leon exhibited at places such as Ars Electronica, IMPAKT and V2_ Lab.
