THE ALMOST NORMAL LIFE observes the everyday life of four girls in a residential group for children and young people run by the Evangelische Jugendhilfe Friedenhort. Separated from their parents, they struggle for recognition, self-love, self-determination and security. Always with the fervent wish to come home again at some point. Over a period of two years, we accompany their development through ups and downs, feel their aggression and willpower, and see them in interaction with carers, educators, parents and institutions. The film tells of the courage and resilience of young people trying to find their own way in the midst of difficult circumstances. Without assigning blame, the film offers an authentic insight into everyday life in youth welfare services - where everything doesn't always go smoothly, but security and successful adult-child relationships can arise. In the end, the girls still want a “normal life” in which they can use their potential for themselves.
