About event

On Sunday, September 21, 2025, we are organizing a special day in Amsterdam Nieuw West on the Lutkemeerpolder. In the run-up to the national elections in October 2025 and the municipal elections in March 2026, this is the time to reflect on the choices made about the last agricultural land of Amsterdam.

The story

In the Lutkemeerpolder in Amsterdam-West are the last fields of the city. For centuries, farms and food production were part of the urban life, but now this piece of fertile sea clay land is under pressure. The municipality still wants to build huge distribution centers at this location, while many Amsterdammers prefer to see the polder preserved for sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and healthy food. There is much less agricultural land available than it was decided by the council members in 2022.

Filmmaker Bart Melief followed the battle around the Lutkemeerpolder for three years (2021 - 2023). In his documentary, he not only records the development of the business park, but also the resistance of farmer Trijntje, involved Amsterdammers and Platform Behoud Lutkemeer. His film is a monument for a retaining Amsterdam knife, an ode to a beautiful polder in a large city.
