In recent years, 46 women in Slovakia have died at the hands of their partner, husband or father of their children. Many of them sought help. They didn't get it in time.
The last such story is the teacher Zuzka from Gelnice. Her children were left without a mother. And her case showed something we can no longer ignore: this is not one failure of one person. The system that is supposed to protect the most vulnerable is failing, but it is not.
We are ordinary women. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, friends. And we ran out of words.
That's why we make a gesture instead of another status. We will meet at the Immaculate in Košice, stand next to each other, walk down Hlavná ulica together and quietly, with dignity, show that this is no longer a private matter that happens behind closed doors. It's a matter for all of us.
Come in black - as a sign of solidarity with all those who didn't survive.
Bring a candle. At Immaculate, we light one for each of the 46 women. So that they are not just a number.
What we are coming for
We are not protesting against anyone. We are coming to ask for specific measures that work elsewhere in Europe and save lives:
🔹 deportation of a domestic abuser
🔹 high-quality risk assessment of victims at risk
🔹 GPS monitoring of the most dangerous offenders
🔹 better cooperation of the police, courts and authorities
🔹 protection of the victim when the offender is released
🔹 enough safe places and trained guides for victims in crisis
🔹 professional training of the police, prosecutor's office and courts
🔹 audit of every murder of a woman by a close person - so that the system learns from each case
We want no woman to be afraid to ask for help. So that domestic violence - between partners or between parents and children - stops being trivialized and becomes what it should be in a decent society: completely unacceptable.
And we invite you, men, too.
This is not an action against men. Most of you are decent partners and fathers who reject violence. That's why it makes sense for you to be here - domestic violence is not a "women's issue", it concerns the whole society. Your presence will show that protecting victims is a matter of course and a real strength.
We don't want to turn it into politics. We want to create a social order for change - peacefully, politely and together. Because we know one thing: if we don't stand up now, one day our daughters may pay for it.
Come. It matters to each and every one of you.
