Drew McDowall returns to Prague after five years with his latest album A Thread, Silvered and Trembling, which has traditionally been released on Dais Records, with two concerts in two consecutive days.
A lifelong interest in the elegiac solo piping style called pibroch inspired much of his previous work (including Coil's legendary Time Machines album). And this time, too, he includes, transforms, and weaves these elements into an electroacoustic tapestry of strings, vibrations, voids, and voices, alternately depersonalized and displaced. His latest album takes you to his most sublime and least graspable musical state.
With both of Coil's main protagonists dead, everyone who had anything to do with them is happy to live on their legacy, but Drew McDowall was with their most important recordings for several years and officially became a member of the group. He was also part of Psychic TV in the 1980s and formed the post-punk band The Poems with his then-wife Rose McDowall, which went on to become Strawberry Switchblade and countless projects that David Keenan later named England's Hidden Reverse.
